New Prostate Cancer Research
Which discovery will turn out to be the next big breakthrough? At ZERO we are committed to staying on the cutting edge of research and to provide men with the information they need to stay informed about what is happening on the science side of prostate cancer prevention, testing and treatment research. This section provides you with information on the latest discoveries in a variety of arenas so you can be in the know and at the top of your game when it comes to making the right decisions for you.
Unless otherwise stated, the drugs, treatments or claims in this section have not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Study results are provided for your general information only. Please talk to your doctor before making changes to your diet or treatment.
Testing and Diagnosis
Ongoing research is being conducted to more accurately determine which men need biopsies and which do not. To that end, more research needs to be done to better diagnose cancers and determine which are likely to become deadly, and which can safely be lived with. In addition, research is looking to pinpoint the location of cancer cells and tumors, both to determine the spread of cancer and guide precision surgery and radiation.

Risk Factors
Research is being conducted to find out what causes prostate cancer so we can find ways to interrupt the process. Research needs to be conducted to determine how different factors may affect your risk of prostate cancer, prognosis or treatment outcomes.
Family History | Race | Age | Obesity | Smoking
Prevention and Diet
Scientists continually look to identify or confirm that certain foods and substances can lower, or increase, your risk of developing cancer. Some drugs may even help men, with pre-cancerous conditions (HGPIN) or slow-growing prostate cancer, avoid ever having to undergo treatment.
Soy | Vegetables | Anti-Oxidant Beverages | Vitamin D | Vitamin E | Lycopene | Selenium Good and Bad Fats | Calcium and Dairy Products
Treatment
Existing and new treatments are constantly evaluated to try to improve treatment for patients. Research continues to evaluate the effectiveness of various prostate cancer treatment methods.
Robotically Assisted Surgery | Radiation | Cryotherapy | High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
Hormone Therapy
Research is being conducted on hormone therapy to come up with more effective ways of blocking hormone-driven cancer with fewer side effects. This research is also looking to prevent prostate cancer from becoming hormone independent.
Hormone Therapy
Bone Treatment and Pain Management
Researchers want to find the most effective way of preventing cancer cells from taking root in bone and growing new tumors. In addition, more work needs to be done to alleviate the bone weakness associated with hormone therapy and the pain caused by cancer that has spread to the bone.
Bisphosphonates and Other Bone-related Drugs
Chemotherapy
More work needs to be done to develop more effective chemotherapy drugs and drug combinations to combat prostate cancer. Researchers are looking to study drugs to break down cancer’s chemotherapy resistance.
Chemotherapy | Taxotere | Therapy Combinations and Chemosynthesizers
New Forms of Treatment
To target and kill cancer cells and leave healthy cell unharmed, researchers are looking at the role of genes and proteins in the cancer process, and how vaccines may provide new ways to treat the disease.

Support Research
ZERO continues to fight for major increases in research funding to support new discoveries and speed up the process of making new drugs available.
