Board Members
Wesley S. Williams, Jr. - Chairman
A national business leader, "who's who" lawyer and a prostate cancer survivor, Rev. Wesley S. Williams, Jr. was unanimously elected as Chairman of ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer / National Prostate Cancer Coalition in December 2003, with an objective to increase awareness of the disease, as well as the organization's financial operating capacity.
Ordained as a Deacon in 2008 at the Virginia Theological Seminary, Williams is co-chairman and co-CEO of Lockhart Companies, Inc. the largest owner of shopping centers and undeveloped land on the island of St. Thomas. Mr. Williams is a member of the District of Columbia and New York Bars, and a retired attorney from the firm of Covington & Burling - which has law offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, London and Brussels, and a correspondent office in Paris. During his tenure, he was listed by Woodward and White as one of the Best Lawyers in America.
Williams' resume contains a lifetime of fundraising experience, which includes his current role as the Chairman of the Executive Committee at the Smithsonian Institution's governing Board of Regents, and his past role as National Chairman of the Harvard Law School Fund.
A business veteran, Mr. Williams currently serves as Presiding Independent Director of CarrAmerica Realty Corporation and is a member of the Board of Directors of The Bear Stearns Companies.
Williams holds B.A. and J.D. degrees from Harvard University, an M.A. degree from Fletcher School (as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow), an LL.M. degree from Columbia University, and an LL.D. degree (honoris causa) from Virginia Union University in Richmond. In 2002, Williams was invested as an honorary Knight of the Most Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
Williams is married to Karen Hastie Williams, a partner at Crowell & Moring, member of the U.S. Internal Review Service Oversight Board and former Chairwoman of the Susan G. Komen Foundation's National Race for a Cure. The couple has three children: Amanda, Bo and Baily.
Clay W. Hamlin, III - Vice Chair
Clay Hamlin, former CEO and current Vice Chairman and member of the Board of Trustees at Corporate Officer Properties Trust (COPT [a publicly traded company specializing in real estate investment trust that nearly 19 million square feet in rentable space]), has raised more than $750,000 for the prostate cancer cause since joining ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer / National Prostate Cancer Coalition's Board of Directors in 2001.
From May 1989 until joining COPT, Mr. Hamlin was the managing partner of the Shidler Group's Mid-Atlantic region, where he supervised the acquisition, management and leasing of over four million square feet of commercial property. He has been active in the real estate business for over 30 years. Mr. Hamlin is a founding shareholder of First Industrial Realty Trust, Inc. and also serves as a Director/Trustee of TractManager, Inc.
Mitch Laurance - Vice Chair
ESPN commentator, TV personality and prostate cancer survivor, Mitch Laurance joined ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer in 2008 as he helped forge a partnership between the organization and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday for raise funds to award research grants to find a better test for the disease. He also serves as a spokesperson for ZERO.
Mr. Laurance has appeared in more than 50 TV shows including Saturday Night Live, Not Necessarily the News, Matlock, and Dawson's Creek and writes for various golf magazines and hosts the TV show, "On the Green Golf Video Showcase" in Myrtle Beach. Mitch is married to Ewa Laurance also known as the Striking Viking, a World, US Open and National 9-Ball Pool Champion Billiards Congress of America Hall Fame inductee.
Jonathan D. Schwartz - Acting Treasurer
Jonathan D. Schwartz is the director of operations and business development for Vericom Corporation, a company which offers health care solutions to hospitals, health systems, managed care and physicans for 20 years. At Vericom, Schwartz is responsible for business development and strategy bringing 15 years of experience in customer engagement management, strategy, management consulting, sales and operations management to his company.
Jonathan D. Schwartz is a board member for ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer and is the son of ZERO's former CEO, William A. Schwartz, who died of prostate cancer in 2002.
R. Hunter Biden
R. Hunter Biden, son of Vice-President Joe Biden of Delaware and founding partner of Oldaker, Biden and Belair, was a Presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he served as the Executive Director for e-Commerce Policy Coordination under Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta during the Clinton Administration.
Mr. Biden has a B.A. from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Yale Law School. Mr. Biden assists ZERO with annual fundraising activities and advocacy efforts.
Ken Griffey, Sr.
Former Major League Baseball star and prostate cancer survivor, Ken Griffey won two World Series Championships for the Cincinnati Reds The Big Red Machine in 1975 and 1976 and MVP of the 1980 All-Star Game. He is also the father of future Hall of Fame Major League Baseball player Ken Griffey, Jr.
In 2004, Griffey was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and he currently serves the ball club as a special consultant to the general manager and a talent scout. He now resides in Orlando, Fla. and serves as the CEO of the Ken Griffey, Sr. Foundation.
Griffey joined ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer in 2008 as a board member and spokesperson.
Mike Milken
One of the largest prostate cancer philanthropists in the world, Mr. Milken is the founder of the Prostate Cancer Foundation and one of the original board members of Zero The Project to End Prostate Cancer / National Prostate Cancer Coalition in 1996. His efforts were a continuation of his medical-research initiatives that started in the 1970s. In 1982, he formalized his philanthropic activities by co-founding the Milken Family Foundation, which has been one of America's leading supporters of cancer research, prevention and treatment.
Mr. Milken also serves as Chairman of the Milken Institute, a non-profit economic think tank, and its Washington, DC-based FasterCures The Center for Accelerating Medical Solutions. As a financier, Milken is often said to have revolutionized modern capital markets. The thousands of companies that he financed created millions of jobs.
Dr. Thomas E. Moody
Dr. Thomas E. Moody is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, AL and practices urology at the Urology Centers of Alabama. He is an active member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, the Jefferson County Medical Society and the American Urological Association. Certified by the American Board of Urology and a Fellow in the American College of surgeons, Dr. Moody's clinical interests include urinary incontinence, prostate disease, urological cancer, impotence and stone management.
Dr. Moody joined ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer as a board member in 2008.
Tom Quinn
Prostate cancer survivor and driving force behind the creation of a partnership between ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday to generate research dollars for a new test for the disease, Tom Quinn joined the ZERO board in 2008.
Mr. Quinn has spent the last 35 years of a distinguished career that has seen him serve in management, marketing, and sales positions of several medium to large companies. These positions have primarily involved property development on a large scale. He was the driving force behind a South Carolina project that involved the development of a complex that encompassed 1,400 acres and included 1,400 private dwellings, 2-18 hole golf courses, shopping centers, a hotel and a recreation center. He has held a real estate broker's license in Virginia, South Carolina and Florida.
Tom has also established himself as an innovator through his translation of the concept of computer time sharing to "Interval Ownership" in the vacation real estate market. This adaptation has led to the creation of a multi-billion dollar business with major players such as Disney and Marriott. He is regarded as an expert in this field, having co-authored a book, Making Time-Sharing Work: A Complete Marketing Guide, on the subject. He was in the forefront of real estate development recognizing the profound salutary impact this system would have on, a then struggling REIT industry.
Mr. Quinn has served as president of Piedmont Cancer Foundation in Middleburg, Va. He has served as Executive Director of the Virginia Horseman's Association, the largest thoroughbred breeding association in the Mid-Atlantic region. He has been married for 28 years and has a 26 year-old daughter.
Robin Sparrow
Director of the Project Management Services group of Studley's Washington, D.C. and suburban Washington offices, Mr. Sparrow competes annually in the One Lap of America car race around the country to raise money for the prostate cancer cause.
Having spent 20 years in the architectural and construction industry, Robin has supervised the construction and tenant fit-outs for more than 4 million square feet of construction. Prior to joining Studley, Sparrow was a Senior Project Manager at WorldCom, Inc. where he managed the design and construction of large build-to-suit commercial projects and data centers totaling more than 2 million square feet.
In 2007, Sparrow joined ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer after his mentor and friend Tom Holcomb passed away from the disease.
Jill O'Donnell Tormey, Ph.D.
The Executive Director of the Cancer Research Institute (CRI), Dr. O'Donnell Tormey has served on ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer / National Prostate Cancer Coalition's Board of Directors since 2001.
With more than $45 million in assets, CRI supports and coordinates laboratory and clinical efforts that will lead to the immunological treatment, control and prevention of cancer.
