Drive Against Prostate Cancer Joins Ebony Black Family Reunion, August 12
Nearly 5,000 Statewide will be Diagnosed this Year
WASHINGTON, DC About three Memphis men die every month from prostate cancer. In fact, only 53 percent of men at risk for prostate cancer get the annual testing they need, and black men have the highest prostate cancer mortality rate in the world.
Despite the devastating facts, there is hope through early detection and education. That’s why the National Prostate Cancer Coalition (NPCC) has teamed up with the Gillette Prostate Cancer Challenge and the Ebony Black Family Reunion to screen men in Memphis.
“Bringing free screenings to Memphis is truly a team effort and we sincerely thank all the groups involved,” said NPCC CEO Richard N. Atkins, M.D. “We hope our efforts will save lives and get people to notice the risks of prostate cancer and get involved in the cause.”
WHAT: Free Screenings onboard the Drive Against Prostate Cancer
WHERE and WHEN: Audubon Park 750 Cherry Rd. Memphis, TN 2:30 6 p.m.
What is the Drive Against Prostate Cancer? The Drive Against Prostate Cancer, 39-foot RVs donated by Thor Industries that look like giant race cars, is the only national mobile screening program for prostate cancer. On board, men are treated to sports on a large flat screen TV, free snacks and invited to surf the web while they wait. Local licensed physicians conduct a full screening for prostate cancer. Bayer Diagnostics and the University of Michigan, our program partners, help make the screenings free. Each test takes about 10 minutes and patients will receive results in the mail in less than a week.
About the National Prostate Cancer Coalition Celebrating 10 years of saving lives, the National Prostate Cancer Coalition sets the standard for rapidly reducing the burden of prostate cancer on American men and their families through awareness, outreach and advocacy.
