Hampton University's Cancer Center

I heartily support Chuck Davis in his efforts to secure state funding for the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute ("Davis' widower seeks cancer funds," Jan. 18). In June 2007, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After evaluating all the options I decided on proton therapy and applied to the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute in Jacksonville. I completed treatment Dec. 19.
While there, I met several others from across the area and North Carolina who had followed the same procedure for electing treatment. Reason: It is safe with no noticeable side effects, and it allows you to continue daily activity.
I also met several locals who, while getting treatment, continued to work. Our area needs and deserves the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute.
Incidentally, proton therapy is not just for prostate cancer. It will work on any tumor and is very effective for treating children who have inoperable tumors.
