Kansas City Chiefs Host Free Prostate Cancer Screening to Honor Lamar Hunt

Nearly 4,000 Men will be Diagnosed Statewide this Year; Disease is Second Most Deadly Cancer in Men

(Washington, DC) -- In 2007, nearly 4,000 men throughout the state of Missouri will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 500 will die from the disease. Overall, state legislators need to make prostate cancer a priority, especially after Missouri’s grade plummeted from a B to a C- on this year’s Prostate Cancer Report Card (www.fightprostatecancer.org/2007reportcards). Despite the grim statistics, there is hope if detected early, making prostate cancer one of the more treatable forms of cancer.

Beginning Saturday, December 15, the National Prostate Cancer Coalition (NPCC) will team up with the Kansas City Cancer Center, US Oncology Network, the American Cancer Society, the Kansas City Chiefs, and others to provide free prostate cancer screenings for three days in sites across the region. Local residents were touched by prostate cancer when former Chief’s owner, Lamar Hunt, died from complications with the disease late last year.

“Lives are being saved every day through early detection on board the Drive Against Prostate Cancer,” said National Prostate Cancer Coalition CEO Richard N. Atkins, M.D. “This 10 minute test could save your life.”

What is the Drive Against Prostate Cancer?
It’s big, it’s purple, it’s the Drive Against Prostate Cancer - a mobile screening unit where local licensed physicians conduct a two-part screening procedure, which includes a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and physical examination. The screenings are conducted in a 39-foot Airstream Land Yacht XL, owned by Thor Industries and designed specifically for prostate cancer screenings. The exams are free, thanks in part to Bayer Diagnostics and University of Michigan Labs.

About the National Prostate Cancer Coalition
The National Prostate Cancer Coalition sets the standard for rapidly reducing the burden of prostate cancer on American men and their families through awareness, outreach and advocacy.
