What's New at ZERODASH FOR DAD Becomes a 'Family Affair' for the Orton Clan
This year's DASH FOR DAD is truly a "family affair" for Stephanie Orton Lynch of Alexandria, Virginia. All six of her brothers and sisters are congregating from across the U.S. to run the race. Add several grandchildren to the mix, and the result is a 16-member "Team Gomer" that will compete Sept. 26 in the Capital Area race to be held in Alexandria, just outside Washington, D.C. (Shown in photo are members of the Orton family, with Donna and Stephanie in sleeveless vests on the right.) "Going public" is how Stephanie describes her reason for running in the DASH FOR DAD in 2009 and convincing the entire family to join her for the race this year. "We wanted to leverage the DASH race as a way to open up dialogue with our Dad about his cancer and radiation treatment," she said. "The topic was never really open for discussion within the family because of the rather personal and private nature of the cancer. But, after running the race last year, everything is for the better about how we talk and deal with it as a family." Team Gomer's goal is to raise $3,000 by utilizing Facebook as the primary method of fundraising. "Between all the family members already on Facebook, we have more than 1,000 friends, so we thought that would be a perfect and easy place to start," said Donna Orton Rosberg, the youngest of the seven siblings. Money is being raised in honor of their father, Steve Orton of Lorton, VA. He is a 15-year cancer survivor who underwent radiation treatment last fall following a recurrence of cancer. "After a very rough year, he is doing great and we are happy to be traveling again and enjoying life," comments Elva Orton, Steve’s wife of 46 years. DASH FOR DAD is the reason the Orton family is having its first "mini-reunion" in several years. Stephanie used a recent gift of three free airline passes to bring in family members from the West Coast. Some are avid runners; others will participate in the fun walk. "Dads need our love and attention, too, and the whole family is excited about this year's race."
National Race Series Coming to 14 Cities to Raise Prostate Cancer AwarenessLace up your sneakers and join us in the race to end prostate cancer! The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® and DASH FOR DAD, the premier prostate cancer race series in the U.S., is a heartfelt tight-knit community event that brings together athletes, cancer survivors, physicians, caregivers, family members and friends. Proceeds from each race are used to provide free prostate cancer testing for men in the local community of the event. Races will be held this year in 14 cities with an expected 7,000 runners, as shown below:
Since the national race series began in 2008, more than $1 million has been raised to promote prostate cancer awareness, early detection and research. Many runners create teams and collect monetary pledges from family and friends to boost funding for local prostate cancer services. "The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® and DASH FOR DAD race series elevates prostate cancer awareness to a broader nationwide level," said ZERO's CEO Skip Lockwood. "We all know someone who is impacted by this most commonly diagnosed cancer among men, striking one in every six. That's why we must do all that we can to put an end to this horrible disease."
