Nanoparticle PSA Test Predicts If Prostate Cancer Will Return; Ultrasensitive Test Gives First Accurate Answer After Surgery

Ultrasensitive PSA test, using nanoparticle-based technology, is 300 times more accurate in detecting prostate cancer and "may be able to definitively predict after surgery if the cancer is cured long term or if it will recur," this Northwestern University research indicates.

Study: Radiation Boosts Prostate Cancer Survival

This Canadian study shows that for men with cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, survival is "significantly better" if radiation therapy is added to the standard hormone treatments.

Dogs Sniff Out Prostate Cancer

French research indicates very strong accuracy rate by dogs trained to sniff out the chemicals released into urine by prostate tumors, and these findings may set the stage for a new means of early prostate cancer detection.

Awareness campaign adds Hall of Fame sports legends Jim Kelly, Ozzie Smith and Mike Bossy with continued support by Ken Griffey Sr., Rod Woodson, Joe Cortez and Len Dawson

With the goal of bringing an end to this terrible disease, Kimberly-Clark Corporation's Depend brand launched the second year of "The Depend Campaign to End Prostate Cancer."

The four-month campaign, which kicks off this June in celebration of Men's Health Month and culminates in September with National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, engages a star-studded lineup of sports legends as campaign ambassadors and awareness advocates. In addition to encouraging men to talk to their doctor to learn more about their risk for prostate cancer, each legend has pledged to share more about his personal experience with the disease as well as demonstrate to men how easy it is to be proactive about prostate health.

Through 2010, proceeds from the purchase of each package of Depend Underwear for Men and Depend Guards for Men will contribute to a total donation of $250,000 to ZERO — The Project to End Prostate Cancer to help fund education and research initiatives.

Go to www.dependpca.com to see videos of the team members as well as access a comprehensive resource library of articles, essays and tools to help you ask the right questions and make smart decisions about prostate health.

"Our hope for future generations is that prostate cancer becomes a thing of the past," said Skip Lockwood, Chief Executive Officer of ZERO — The Project to End Prostate Cancer. "We commend Kimberly-Clark and the Depend brand for their commitment to making men more aware of their prostate health and the steps that can be taken to reduce their risk for the disease."

'Know Your Score' Celebrity Golf Tournament Coming to Myrtle Beach August 28

The 2010 "Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer" Celebrity Golf Tournament and Gala will be held August 28 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Serving as this year's national spokesman for the event will be award-winning journalist and television personality Jim Huber, who shares a personal story.

"Prostate cancer found its cruel way into my life years ago when doctors discovered it in my father. By coincidence, he and Arnold Palmer were both battling the disease simultaneously and I am sure it helped my dad along his way when Arnie asked every so often what my old man's numbers were. They both, as it turned out, beat it partially because their doctors caught it early. They knew their score. Every man must. It's my honor to be taking a role in that emphasis."

Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday joined forces with Zero — The Project to End Prostate Cancer in 2008 to launch the "Know Your Score" campaign, which refers to the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test given to men 40 years of age or older to help detect prostate cancer.

Planning a golf holiday? Now you have a reason!

A Cake Too Beautiful to Eat

Know Your Score Cake

Celebrating "National Cancer Survivors Day" at a picnic on June 6 came with a gigantic sweet tooth for Linda and Ray Hoetger of Canal Winchester, Ohio.

Linda made a beautiful cake called "Know Your Score" to emphasize the importance of prostate cancer early detection. (Her husband Ray was treated in 2009 and is doing well.)

Linda & Ray Hoetger

Linda's cake, however, was deemed so pretty that no one dared to be the first to cut into it! There it sat during the picnic, beautiful yet untouched, for everyone to see.

"So Ray took the cake to the Veterans Affairs Clinic where he works," explained Linda. "They also said it was too cute, but he made them cut into it. The Veterans love a treat!"

Research and Treatment Update

New Tests for Prostate Cancer Might Bring More Certainty

These experimental gene-based tests can reduce unnecessary biopsies and personal anxiety, researchers say, by distinguishing between patients requiring immediate treatment and those who can remain on "watchful waiting" status.

Molecular Imaging Detects Recurrent Prostate Cancer

A new molecular imaging agent can improve diagnosis of recurrent prostate cancer and determine an appropriate course of treatment, according to these Emory University clinical trial findings.

Study: Prostate Cancer Patients' Weight Linked to Tumour Size

The size of prostate cancer tumours is directly linked to a patient’s weight, and researchers believe having a larger-sized tumour may contribute to the aggressive nature of the disease.

Faulty Risk Prediction of Prostate Cancer by Nomograms Without Considering PSA Inter-Assay Variability

The accuracy of prostate cancer detection among different nomograms is limited by variations in PSA values, and researchers recommend patients have their PSA tests performed by the same assay over time.
