What's New at ZEROWhy Run in a Marathon for Charity?
For Steve Davidson of Albany, NY, who lost his father to prostate cancer five years ago, the reason is quite simple. "I am running as a member of ZERO's DASH FOR DAD Team in memory of my father, Donald Davidson," said Steve. "He might still have been with us today if he had the benefit of early detection." Steve (shown in photo with his family) is running in the New York City Marathon set for November 7. "This is my first marathon," he said, "but with all the support I am receiving and a good cause to run for, I am confident I can reach my fundraising goal."
Even though ZERO's DASH FOR DAD Team is complete for the NYC Marathon, you still have time to sign up for ZERO's team for the renowned Marine Corps Marathon set for October 31 in Washington, D.C. "The People's Marathon" attracts runners from all over the world – young and old, first-time marathoners and veterans – who compete in this endurance race for their own personal goals. The race begins and ends at the world-famous Marine Corps War Memorial, passing the Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington memorials along the race route. You, too, can join the fight to end prostate cancer! All runners receive guaranteed entry into the race, a technical training shirt, fundraising website and advice, and a pre-race dinner. Please commit to raise a minimum of $1,000 to help ZERO end prostate cancer. Participants who are traveling to Washington, D.C. for the event and raise $2,000 will receive a $500 travel reimbursement.
'Healing Choices for Prostate Cancer' Helps Men Choose Type of Treatmentby Marianne Pontillo Hearing the words "you have prostate cancer" can be shocking and frightening. And it's all too common. This year, more than 192,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Deciding on a treatment Should you have surgery, radiation, or some combination of both? Hormone therapy? Do nothing? Your doctor, friends and relatives may all have different opinions about which treatment is right for you. You may hear everything from "Joe got the seed implant" to "surgery is the only way to go." Turn to the Internet for information on "prostate cancer treatments," and you'll get a list of more than 2,660,000 articles! To help you better understand your options and find the right treatment for you, experts in prostate cancer from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, the University of Colorado Cancer Center, and the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service have developed a new study called Healing Choices for Prostate Cancer. "If a patient sees a radiologist, one can expect radiation as a recommended treatment. If they see a surgeon, then surgery often leads the list of options. This study offers a neutral platform that explores and explains all the available options and helps patients identify the treatment choice that is best for them," said Dr. Michael Diefenbach of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the study's lead investigator. How the Healing Choices for Prostate Cancer study works If you’ve been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and have not yet begun any treatment, you may be eligible to participate in Healing Choices for Prostate Cancer. After calling a toll-free number (1-866-258-1981) and answering a few questions to ensure you qualify, you will be sent information on prostate cancer treatment options. This can be printed materials, a CD, or Internet-based information. You'll receive two follow-up phone calls during the next nine months. You'll speak with an interviewer, just as you did during your initial call, who can ascertain if the information helped you make a treatment decision. The phone calls are confidential and all three calls take about 40 minutes. To participate in Healing Choices for Prostate Cancer:
Call toll free: 1-866-258-1981 and ask for the Healing Choices for Prostate Cancer study.
Celebrate ‘National Cancer Survivors Day’ on June 6Making plans for this coming weekend? Now you have a reason! Honoring America’s 11 million cancer survivors, "National Cancer Survivors Day" will be observed across the U.S. on Sunday, June 6, with events such as parades, carnivals, races, ball games, picnics and much more. This annual event celebrates life and honors cancer survivors for their strength and courage while also acknowledging the contributions of families, friends, healthcare providers, researchers and others who support the cause.
Promoting Prostate Cancer Awareness in the Church and the Barbershop"Taking the message to the people" is aptly demonstrated by three initiatives currently underway to promote prostate cancer awareness.
Churches across the U.S. are being mobilized to participate in the first annual Father’s Day Prostate Cancer Awareness Sunday, set for June 20. "African-American churches traditionally have educated congregations on health issues impacting the African-American community, and this program taps into the faith community’s influence," said the Reverend Ronald J. Weatherford, a United Methodist Minister in High Point, NC and the founder of Nia's Ark Inc., an organization that aims to build capacity among faith-based and community-based organizations to address health disparity issues. The goal of this event, sponsored by the Prostate Health Education Network, is to provide education for African-American men so that they can make informed health care decisions on prostate cancer testing. African-American men are more than twice as likely to die of prostate cancer and the disease is highly treatable if detected in its initial stages, which is why early detection is so important. Chesapeake Urology Associates, based in the Baltimore, MD area and the largest urology practice in the Mid-Atlantic Region, has long understood the value of outreach into the faith-based community. Each year, Chesapeake Urology provides free prostate cancer testing to hundreds of men through collaborating with churches across the Baltimore area. Nearly a dozen church-based screenings are scheduled this year. "The church is the center of life for many individuals, and we understand the importance of raising awareness in this way," said Sanford J. Siegel, president and CEO of Chesapeake Urology. Siegel regularly addresses church congregations, which can number in the thousands, to explain the importance of early prostate cancer detection. He also works with media partners such as Radio One to promote the availability of free testing.
Another important venue of everyday American life is the barbershop, and The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program has launched a 50-city tour this year to promote health education on prostate cancer, diabetes and hypertension. Throughout the U.S., the black-owned barbershop historically has been a setting where African-American men have been able to gather and discuss the issues of the day with trust and camaraderie. By using the barbershop setting to promote awareness of the health care disparities that exist among African-American men, The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program is helping men understand the importance of early detection measures that can protect their health.

National Race Series Coming to 14 Cities to Raise Prostate Cancer AwarenessLace up your sneakers and join us in the race to end prostate cancer! DASH FOR DAD, the premier prostate cancer race series in the U.S., is a heartfelt tight-knit community event that brings together athletes, cancer survivors, physicians, caregivers, family members and friends. Proceeds from each 10K race are used to provide free prostate cancer testing for men in the local community of the event. ZERO – The Project to End Prostate Cancer, with sponsors from across the country, has grown the DASH FOR DAD and its partner races – the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® – to include 14 cities and an expected 7,000 runners competing in 2010. The DASH FOR DAD or partnering Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® 5K will be held in the following cities:
Since the national race series began in 2008, more than $1 million has been raised to promote prostate cancer awareness, early detection and research. Many runners create teams and collect monetary pledges from family and friends to boost funding for local prostate cancer services. Urology medical practices and other supporting organizations are especially encouraged to organize a DASH FOR DAD, due to the importance of providing free prostate cancer testing and promoting research for a cure. Click here to download the DASH FOR DAD race application. "DASH FOR DAD elevates prostate cancer awareness to a broader nationwide level," said ZERO's CEO Skip Lockwood. "We all know someone who is impacted by this most commonly diagnosed cancer among men, striking one in every six. That's why we must do all that we can to put an end to this horrible disease."
