What's New at ZERO

New Members Elected to ZERO's Board of Directors

Dr. Sanford “Sandy” Siegel of Baltimore, MD and Mrs. Sherry S. Galloway of Albuquerque, NM are new members of ZERO’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Siegel is the President and CEO of Chesapeake Urology Associates, the largest urology practice in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic Region with 16 urology centers, the Prostate Center, the Incontinence Center and 14 surgical centers throughout the greater Baltimore, Maryland area. Dr. Siegel initiated the Chesapeake Urology Scholarship Program and was a leader in establishing the Chesapeake Urology Scholar through the American Urological Association Foundation. In 2007, he led the formation of the “Great Prostate Cancer Challenge” (GPCC) to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer research. GPCC 5K races, in partnership with ZERO’s DASH FOR DAD race series, represent the premier men’s health race event in the U.S. which is coming to 12 cities this year and engaging more than 6,000 runners and 10,000 volunteers, spectators and supporters. Dr. Siegel graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and received specialty training at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. He has practiced urology in the Baltimore area for more than 20 years and is certified by the American Board of Urology.

Mrs. Galloway (shown in photo with her son, Jeremy) is a registered nurse. She received an A.A. in registered nursing and a B.A. in psychology. She worked as an emergency room nurse for almost 30 years and then attended Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA, where she studied massage therapy. She later relocated to Albuquerque where she taught medical massage at the New Mexico Academy of Healing Arts in Santa Fe.  Currently, she works as a registered nurse and also teaches at the Central New Mexico City College system which has five campuses. Her work involves informing the student population about various diseases, particularly cancer, and teaching awareness. Mrs. Galloway directly experienced the impact of prostate cancer as her husband had the disease in his late 40s.  Her only son, 36-year-old Jeremy, died from prostate cancer in 2007 after an 18-month struggle. Mrs. Galloway became involved with ZERO during the period of her son’s illness when she would contact the organization for information and support. She joined ZERO’s Founders Club and attended ZERO’s annual Summit to End Prostate Cancer in Washington, D.C. She plans to write a book about her son’s story to raise public awareness of prostate cancer and the need for increased research to find a cure.

'DASH FOR DAD' Race Series Coming to 12 Cities to Raise Prostate Cancer Awareness

As National Race Series Expands Across U.S. in 2010, Supporters Are Encouraged to Bring This Event to Their City

Lace up your sneakers and join us in the race to end prostate cancer!

DASH FOR DAD, the premier prostate cancer race series in the U.S., is a heartfelt tight-knit community event that brings together athletes, cancer survivors, physicians, caregivers, family members and friends. Proceeds from each 10K race are used to provide free prostate cancer testing for men in the local community of the event.

ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer, with sponsors from across the country, has grown the DASH FOR DAD and its partner races - the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® - to include 12 cities and an expected 6,000 runners competing in 2010.

The DASH FOR DAD or partnering Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® 5K will be held in the following cities:

  Dash for Dad

  • Albuquerque, NM - Nov. 2010
  • Baltimore, MD - Sept. 26
  • Buffalo, NY - Sept. 19
  • Central FL - Oct. 23
  • Columbus, OH - Aug. 29
  • Harrisburg, PA - Sept. 10
  • Indianapolis, IN - Sept. 18
  • Kansas City, MO - Sept. 19
  • Memphis, TN - Sept. 11
  • Nashville, TN - Sept. 11
  • New York, NY (Long Island) - Nov. 14
  • Washington, DC (Alexandria, VA) - Sept. 26

Since the national race series began in 2008, more than $1 million has been raised to promote prostate cancer awareness, early detection and research. Many runners create teams and collect monetary pledges from family and friends to boost funding for local prostate cancer services.

Hosting a DASH FOR DAD is a significant way to promote prostate cancer awareness in your area - and there is still time to bring this race to your city!

Urology medical practices and other supporting organizations are especially encouraged to organize a DASH FOR DAD, due to the importance of providing free prostate cancer testing and promoting research for a cure. Click here to download the DASH FOR DAD race application.

"DASH FOR DAD elevates prostate cancer awareness to a broader nationwide level," said ZERO's CEO Skip Lockwood. "We all know someone who is impacted by this most commonly diagnosed cancer among men, striking one in every six. That's why we must do all that we can to put an end to this horrible disease."

For more information about the DASH FOR DAD 10K or if you're interested in hosting a DASH FOR DAD run to your city, contact Tracy Cesaretti.
