ZERO leads the fight to end prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men. By promoting greater awareness of the need for early detection and leveraging public resources for life-saving research and new treatments for those with advanced disease, we will win this fight. We envision a future that grants a life-giving legacy to our sons and grandsons: the first generation of men who are free from prostate cancer - "Generation ZERO." ZERO seeks your commitment to end prostate cancer by investing in Generation ZERO, a campaign to raise $2.5 million for free testing, research and community grants, and advocacy measures for increased federal funding to find a cure. ZERO is launching a unique non-profit "IPO" - an "Immediate Public Opportunity" - so you and other supporters can show your commitment by purchasing shares of stock in Generation ZERO. This is your ground-floor opportunity to get more involved and make a profound difference. The price of each share is $18.52, and 135,000 shares will be issued. The issuance amount represents the number of men who are expected to die of prostate cancer (27,000) during each of the next five years. Your purchase of Generation ZERO stock can help take us to a future that is free of prostate cancer! Help us make it happen! Purchase stock in the name of a loved one (father, brother, grandchild, etc.) to show your commitment! If you wish, we will put that individual's name on the stock certificate. DASH FOR DAD Team Member Ready to Take On the New York City Marathon
More attention needed for prostate cancer awareness, says Paul Stevens of Portland, Maine When he's not working on the computer at his architectural and engineering firm, Paul Stevens of Portland, Maine is out jogging 35 miles each week to stay in shape for the dozen or so competitive races he enters throughout the year. Stevens particularly wanted to run the ING New York City Marathon this November with his son, John, but the lottery for selecting the runners for the race showed no such father-son consideration. John won an entry slot to the race, but Paul did not -- so he joined ZERO's DASH FOR DAD 25-member endurance team that will be competing in the marathon. So now, Paul can run the 26.2 mile course through New York City with his son after all. "DASH FOR DAD is the right team for me because prostate cancer is a male disease and until learning about ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer, I had never seen an organization raising money for prostate cancer," Stevens said. "There needs to be more attention paid to creating awareness of prostate cancer and the need for check-ups so men can increase their chance of early diagnosis," he said. "I am convinced if there was as much hurrah about PSA testing as there is for mammograms and breast cancer, then a lot more guys would come to realize the importance of early detection so that this disease can be diagnosed in time to be cured." Stevens has many friends who have been stricken with prostate cancer. He has even navigated the Medicare system on behalf of one close family friend who has metastatic prostate cancer, taking him to his doctor appointments and treatments for the past two years. "I know as much about prostate cancer at this point as if I had it myself," he said. All DASH FOR DAD team members have their fundraising web page, and Stevens surpassed his original $2,500 goal in less than two weeks. Now he's adding to that total, expecting to exceed the $3,500 mark. When he's not running (he placed second in his age group at the Sarasota half marathon this past spring), Stevens manages the Portland design firm founded by his great-grandfather 125 years ago. He and his wife spend half of each year living on an island in Casco Bay and travel by boat to get to Portland. "I also own a 1973 Porsche 911 which keeps my bank account depleted," he added. RUNNER ALERT: You still have time to enter the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 7!
As the largest and perhaps most prestigious of all marathons, the New York City Marathon is a highly competitive event to enter. This year, about 120,000 people entered the random lottery for the available 38,000 runner slots for this race. But... YOU can still run in this marathon! Join ZERO's DASH FOR DAD endurance team and be a part of marathon history! You'll have your own donation website and list-serv and can obtain fundraising advice and other tools to make the race something you'll remember for the rest of your life. Offering scenic neighborhood and skyline views, the marathon's 26.2 mile course passes through all five New York City boroughs, starting on Staten Island, winding through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, and ending in Manhattan's Central Park. Along the way, runners will see and hear more than 2 million New Yorkers who come out to cheer them, along with more than 100 live bands adding to the ebullient atmosphere that can only found be in New York on what is traditionally known as "Marathon Sunday." DASH FOR DAD, the premier prostate cancer race series in the U.S., is a heartfelt tight-knit community event that brings together athletes, cancer survivors, physicians, caregivers, family members and friends. Proceeds from each 10K race are used to provide free prostate cancer testing for men in the local community of the event. ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer, with sponsors from across the country, has grown the DASH FOR DAD and its partner races - the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge - to include 11 cities and an expected 7,000 runners competing in 2010. The DASH FOR DAD or partnering Great Prostate Cancer Challenge 5K will be held in the following cities:
Since the national race series began in 2008, more than $1 million has been raised to promote prostate cancer awareness, early detection and research. Many runners create teams and collect monetary pledges from family and friends to boost funding for local prostate cancer services. Hosting a DASH FOR DAD is a significant way to promote prostate cancer awareness in your area - and there is still time to bring this race to your city! Urology medical practices and other supporting organizations are especially encouraged to organize a DASH FOR DAD, due to the importance of providing free prostate cancer testing and promoting research for a cure. Click here to download the DASH FOR DAD race application. "DASH FOR DAD elevates prostate cancer awareness to a broader nationwide level," said ZERO's CEO Skip Lockwood. "We all know someone who is impacted by this most commonly diagnosed cancer among men, striking one in every six. That's why we must do all that we can to put an end to this horrible disease." Funding for Prostate Cancer Research at Risk - Write Congress Today! Please WRITE TODAY to Support the Prostate Cancer Research Program
The Prostate Cancer Research Program is one of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs at the Department of Defense. For more than 10 years, the program has been the model of efficiency and effectiveness, but now after nine years of nearly stagnant funding, the program is being forced to make tough funding decisions -- which could jeopardize good research and prolong our fight against the disease that takes the lives of 27,000 men each year. Please write to your Congressman and Senators today. Ask them to support the request made by their colleagues to provide increased funding for the Prostate Cancer Research Program. For every year that Congress does not increase this funding, more research is left on the review table and less work is done to move research into critical clinical trials that could save lives. |
