What's New at ZEROHealth Care Reform Puts Access to PSA Test in JeopardyOn March 21, Democrats passed sweeping healthcare reform legislation that will make health insurance attainable for some 32 million Americans who are currently uninsured. While the healthcare reform bill was signed into law today by President Obama, many of the reforms will not take effect until 2014, including the highly-controversial mandate for all Americans to carry health insurance. One of the key features of the legislation, as touted by many Democrats, was to make preventive health care services affordable and available to all Americans. However, many preventive tests - such as the PSA test - may not be covered. This is because the language of the bill only requires insurers to cover preventive services that are graded an "A" or "B" by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), a panel of physicians that does not include a single urologist. The PSA test did not receive either of these grades from the USPSTF and will not be required to be covered by insurers. We Need Your Help to Increase Prostate Cancer Research FundingWrite your U.S. SENATORS NOW! Deadline is March 24.
ZERO needs your help by communicating to your U.S. Senators to emphasize the importance of increasing funding for prostate cancer research. Senators Tim Johnson (SD) and Mike Crapo (ID) have circulated a letter to their Senate colleagues asking for their support for increased funding for the Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP), which is part of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. The program's funding has been stagnant at around $80 million for nine years. Because of the extended leveling of the program, grants to continue research into clinical trials have slowed to a halt. Unless Congress acts to increase funding for the PCRP, important research cannot move forward to potentially help patients fight their prostate cancer. The DASH FOR DAD or partnering Great Prostate Cancer Challenge 5K will be held in the following cities during September, known as "National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month":
Since the national race series began in 2008, more than $1 million has been raised to promote prostate cancer awareness, early detection and research. Many runners create teams and collect monetary pledges from family and friends to boost funding for local prostate cancer services. Hosting a DASH FOR DAD is a significant way to promote prostate cancer awareness in your area - and there is still time to bring this race to your city! Urology medical practices and other supporting organizations are especially encouraged to organize a DASH FOR DAD, due to the importance of providing free prostate cancer testing and promoting research for a cure. Click here to download the DASH FOR DAD race application. "DASH FOR DAD elevates prostate cancer awareness to a broader nationwide level," said ZERO's CEO Skip Lockwood. "We all know someone who is impacted by this most commonly diagnosed cancer among men, striking one in every six. That's why we must do all that we can to put an end to this horrible disease."
